Nicknamed the ‘shooters sidekick,’ the Leatherman MUT multi-tool was made to provide tactical support for active duty soldiers. The MUT, which was introduced in October 2010, reduces the number of tools a soldier needs to carry while in the field. The U.S. Army collaborated on the concept, which focused on dis-assembling, cleaning and repairing firearms.

While designed for military application, civilian consumers, including hunters, law enforcement, etc., was taken into consideration, also.

From the outside it resembles a Leatherman Super Tool. Once you get “under the hood” you see big changes. The knife blade that is accessible without opening the handles appears to be longer and made of thicker steel. It is a cinch to flick the blade out with one hand. The blade is different from others in that it also has a serrated edge for cutting ropes etc. Another feature is that the blade locks into place. One more tool that is available without opening the handles is a mini-saw.

At first I thought it odd to see a knob that folds out until I realized it doubles a hammer. The Mut discreetly tucks it’s carbineer clip and bottle opener into a handle. While each of the blades and tools lock into place they all have larger and deeper grooves for flicking the tools out of their nesting spot.

As was earlier mentioned, The Leatherman MUT is a device specially designed for the tactical shooter. With the pin-punch set and the hammer mentioned earlier you can easily drive the pins for breaking down your M-1, M-16, and the AR-15′s. The socket that houses your punches also doubles as the socket to hold the bronze scraper and brush that comes with your tool. This is a standard 832 thread so it is interchangeable with the military cleaning rods. There is also a bolt override tool that helps you to pull out the bolt when your gun jams. The needle nose pliers were designed to aid in bolt dis-assembly and firing pin retainer pin removal.

Let’s talk about scopes. The MUT has 3/8″ & 1/2″ wrenches for attaching your scope to the rail without scarring the bolts. Included with your MUT is the needed Philips, Hex and torx bits to dial your optics in. An added bonus is all pins, punches, and bits are replaceable when worn out. This Leatherman comes with a specially designed cutting blade for flexi cuffs, tie-wraps, pallet banding, and other straps you would encounter in the field.

The carrying sheath is called a MOLLE Sheathe. The acronym stands for “Modular Lightweight Load-Carrying Equipment” and simply means that it has additional pockets to carry a 9mm pistol magazine and a flashlight, as well as other lightweight tools.

Leatherman MUT EOD is another unique, specialist tool. The EOD stands for “Explosive Ordinance Device” the EOD has 17 tools in one plus the screwdriver, hex, and torx bits. Some of the different tools that come with this model is a cap crimper, fuse wire-cutters and a c-4 punch that would be specific to an ordinance specialist.
